Close-Grip Bench Press

A pressing movement with triceps emphasis. Builds transferable strength for bench and overhead press.

How to perform

  1. 1.Grip inside shoulder width, shoulder blades retracted
  2. 2.Lower to the lower chest, elbows closer to the body
  3. 3.Press up without bouncing off the chest

Common mistakes

  • Grip too narrow — wrist overload
  • Elbows flared to 90 degrees

Tips

  • Grip about one hand-width inside the shoulders — not narrower

Limitations

Use caution with issues in: shoulders, elbows. If you feel discomfort, reduce the range of motion or swap the exercise — ideally after consulting a coach.
